Kim Harrison is the pen name of Dawn Cook, an American author widely credited as one of the writers who helped define modern urban fantasy in the mid-2000s. She is best known for The Hollows series, following witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan through an alternate Cincinnati where a genetically engineered virus has wiped out much of humanity and left supernatural species, witches, vampires, weres, and pixies among them, living openly alongside the survivors. Beginning with Dead Witch Walking in 2004, the series ran to thirteen main novels plus numerous companion stories, distinguished by its richly detailed alternate-history premise and Rachel's slow-burn evolution from struggling bounty hunter to genuinely powerful witch. Harrison also writes fantasy under her legal name, Dawn Cook, keeping the two bylines associated with different genres. New readers should start with Dead Witch Walking to meet Rachel Morgan and the Hollows' world-building from the beginning. There is no film or television adaptation of The Hollows to date, despite the series' popularity during urban fantasy's peak commercial years. Harrison has continued writing in the same universe with companion works following supporting characters after concluding Rachel's main arc.
