M. C. Beaton

M. C. Beaton was the pen name of Marion Chesney, a Scottish-born author who wrote prolifically across romance and mystery before finding her signature register with two long-running cozy mystery series set worlds apart in tone and geography. Hamish Macbeth (1985- ) follows a lazy, ambitious-only-to-avoid-promotion Highland police constable who'd rather fish and gossip in his coastal village than transfer to a desk job in Strathbane; Agatha Raisin (1992- ) is the brasher, funnier flagship, following a hard-drinking former London PR executive who retires to the Cotswolds expecting peace and instead trips over a body. Both series run on village intrigue, comic timing, and detectives whose flaws are as central to the appeal as their crime-solving. Beaton died on 30 December 2019 at age 83, having sold an estimated 21 million books and ranked among the most-borrowed authors in British libraries. Author R. W. Green, who had ghostwritten several of her later novels, continued both series with the family's blessing starting in 2020 and 2022 respectively, preserving Beaton's voice and casts without a reboot — a succession credited jointly on-cover from that point onward. New readers should start with The Quiche of Death for Agatha Raisin or Death of a Gossip for Hamish Macbeth, both best read in publication order. Hamish Macbeth was adapted into a BBC Scotland series (1995-1997) starring Robert Carlyle; Agatha Raisin became a television series starring Ashley Jensen.
