About the Black Dagger Legacy series

Black Dagger Legacy is J.R. Ward's spin-off from the Black Dagger Brotherhood, set at a training facility where original Brothers put a new generation of vampire recruits through the brutal process of becoming warriors. Blood Kiss opens the series with Paradise, a Chosen of the Scribe Virgin drawn to the program against her caste's expectations, and Craeg, a commoner recruit with everything to prove -- establishing the series' focus on recruits and trainers rather than the founding Brothers themselves.

Each book follows a new couple from within the training program or its orbit, letting J.R. Ward explore class tension within vampire society (the rigid distinctions between the aristocratic glymera, the Chosen, and commoners) alongside the Brotherhood's ongoing war against the Lessening Society. Familiar Brothers appear as instructors and mentors, giving the series a strong connective tissue to the main line even as its own cast of trainees takes center stage.

Complete at four books, Black Dagger Legacy is the deepest of the BDB spin-offs into next-generation training and class dynamics, and reads best once you already know the Brotherhood's core cast and world from the main series.

How to read this series

Read in publication order, starting with Blood Kiss. It runs parallel to the main Black Dagger Brotherhood series' later entries and assumes you already know the Brotherhood, the Lessening Society war, and Caldwell's vampire society -- it is not a starting point for the wider BDB world. Within its own four books, later entries build on relationships and training-program events established earlier, so reading in order is recommended even though each book centers a new couple.
