About the Iron Covenant series

Iron Covenant is a Kate Daniels universe spinoff centered on Hugh d'Ambray, the Preceptor of the Iron Dogs and once the Beast Lord's most formidable enemy -- last seen at war with Kate herself in the main series. Iron and Magic opens the spinoff after Hugh's fall from his old master's favor, forcing him into an uneasy alliance with Elara Harper, guardian of a besieged shapeshifter community, against threats neither can survive alone.

Ilona Andrews (the husband-and-wife team of Ilona and Andrew Gordon) uses the spinoff to give one of Kate Daniels' most complex antagonists a redemption arc and his own central romance, set in the same magic-and-technology-cycling post-Shift world, with world-building and characters that reward readers already deep into the main series.

Only one novel has been published so far; a sequel has been discussed by the authors but remains unreleased as of 2026.

How to read this series

Read Kate Daniels first. Iron and Magic follows Hugh d'Ambray, a major recurring antagonist from the main series, and assumes you already know his history with Kate and the Beast Lord -- it will spoil major Kate Daniels plot developments if read first. Once you're caught up on the main series, Iron and Magic can be read as a self-contained entry point into this spinoff.
