Brennan pairs her trademark wit with genuine gothic dread here -- ritual sacrifice, inherited magic, a town that has quietly accepted its sorcerers' rule for generations -- and Kami herself, a mixed-race, refreshingly unmagical protagonist who solves problems with journalism rather than spellcraft, became one of the more distinctive YA heroines of the early 2010s.
