About the Pegasus series

Long before Anne McCaffrey wrote The Rowan, she was already building the psychic future it belongs to. The Pegasus trilogy tells the origin story of Talents — humans with telepathy, telekinesis and precognition, discovered and organized into a research and rescue force by the Eastern Parapsychic Center under the guidance of the formidable Henry Darrow. To Ride Pegasus (1973), assembled from linked stories McCaffrey wrote across the preceding four years, establishes the earliest Talents fighting public suspicion and institutional resistance to prove their abilities are useful rather than freakish. Pegasus in Flight (1990) and Pegasus in Space (2000) follow the program's maturation, centering increasingly on a young, exceptionally powerful telekinetic named Peter Reidinger as the Talents move from earthbound rescue work toward the space program that will eventually seed the interstellar 'Talents Universe' explored further in The Rowan and its sequels.

Where the later Tower and Hive books are essentially science-fantasy space opera, Pegasus stays grounded in Cold War-era anxieties about a government harnessing extraordinary human abilities: bureaucratic gatekeeping, public fear of psychic power, and the ethical weight of testing minors for Talent. It rewards readers interested in how a science fiction universe's rules get built, showing the institutional and technological groundwork that the later, flashier Rowan series takes for granted.
