Start here: Rogue (2011) — then read straight through in publication order.
The order the books were released — the default way to read the series.
The order the story's events happen in, novellas slotted where they belong.
Robin Monarch is a former CIA operative and one-time master thief, raised as an orphan by a Buenos Aires gang of thieves (the 'Brotherhood') before being recruited into US intelligence work. Mark T. Sullivan's three core novels -- Rogue, Outlaw and Thief -- follow Monarch as he's pulled between his criminal upbringing and his government loyalties, chasing stolen fortunes, rogue intelligence operations and old scores across South America, Europe and Africa.
The trilogy is preceded by three shorter prequel pieces -- Brotherhood, The Art of Rendition and The Escape Artist -- that fill in Monarch's backstory: his initiation into the Buenos Aires thieves' guild, an early CIA rendition job in Russia, and a mission into a warlord's Congo camp to steal a diamond. All three were later collected together as Brotherhood and Other Stories / Rogue Genesis.
Sullivan writes the series with the same propulsive, globe-hopping pace as his Private novels with James Patterson, but Robin Monarch is entirely his own creation, giving the conspiracy-thriller instincts of his early solo work (The Fall Line, Triple Cross) a espionage makeover.
Three full novels -- Rogue, Outlaw and Thief -- plus three shorter prequel pieces (Brotherhood, The Art of Rendition, The Escape Artist) that were later collected as Brotherhood and Other Stories.
No. They were published after Rogue (in 2012, versus Rogue's 2011) and work as backstory rather than required reading; you can start with Rogue and come back to them.
No. Robin Monarch is Sullivan's own solo creation, unrelated to the Private series he co-writes with James Patterson.
No new entry has been published since Thief in 2014, and no further book has been announced as of August 2026.
A collection bundling the three Robin Monarch prequel pieces (Brotherhood, The Art of Rendition, The Escape Artist) into a single volume; it isn't tracked as a separate entry here since its contents are already listed individually.
