C. J. Box's second major series moves away from Joe Pickett's Wyoming game lands into the harder-edged world of law enforcement investigators working Montana and North Dakota. It opens with Back of Beyond, centred on Cody Hoyt, a gifted but self-destructive Bozeman investigator whose best friend dies in a fire Cody is convinced was murder, while his own son goes missing on a wilderness trip led by the chief suspect. Cody's green, methodical partner Cassie Dewell starts the book as a secondary character forced to cover for his drinking and his recklessness, but by the end of the novel she has become the one holding the case together -- and from The Highway onward, she is the series lead.

The books that follow send Cassie after a trucker serial killer preying on women along the interstate, into a lawless North Dakota oil-boom town, and eventually into private investigative work in Montana's ranch country, as she builds a career defined by patient, unglamorous procedure rather than gunslinging instinct. Box gives Cassie a specific, grounded interior life -- a single mother managing a difficult family situation and a body-image self-consciousness that never tips into a plot device -- and uses the shift from a rural sheriff's department to boomtown chaos to Montana private-investigator work to keep the setting evolving book to book. Readers who like Joe Pickett's procedural pacing and sense of Western place, but want a female lead and a more urban-adjacent crime landscape, are the natural audience here.

How to read this series

Publication order, starting with Back of Beyond. The first book is told mostly from Cody Hoyt's point of view with Cassie as his junior partner; her promotion to lead investigator happens over the course of that novel, so starting anywhere else means meeting her mid-transformation without the context. Some retailers group the first four books (Back of Beyond through Paradise Valley) as "The Highway Quartet," but the series continued past that label with The Bitterroots and Treasure State, so publication order across all six is the reliable way to track it rather than treating the quartet as complete in itself.
