About the Gideon Crew series

Gideon Crew is a brilliant, morally flexible problem-solver -- part con artist, part physicist -- recruited by the mysterious engineering firm Effective Engineering Solutions (EES) after a childhood tragedy leaves him with a taste for elaborate, high-stakes heists and impossible retrievals. When Gideon is diagnosed with a fatal brain condition partway through the series, Preston and Child use his shortened timeline to raise the stakes on every job that follows.

The series traces its roots to EES founder Eli Glinn, introduced in the authors' standalone thriller The Ice Limit (2000); Beyond the Ice Limit (2016) directly continues that earlier book's story within the Gideon Crew sequence. Around that connective tissue, the numbered series runs from Gideon's Sword (2011) through The Pharaoh Key (2018), blending archaeological adventure, corporate espionage and globe-spanning heist plotting with the darker, more intimate ticking-clock pressure of Gideon's own mortality.

How to read this series

Read The Ice Limit (2000) first if you want the full backstory of Eli Glinn and EES, though it's optional -- Gideon's Sword (2011) introduces Gideon Crew himself and works as a starting point on its own. From there, publication order through The Pharaoh Key (2018) follows Gideon's diagnosis and shortened timeline as a continuous arc, so reading in sequence matters more here than in most Preston & Child series.

Beyond the Ice Limit (2016), Gideon Crew #4, is a direct sequel to The Ice Limit and pays off much more if you've read that earlier standalone first.
