Retired soldier Alex Easton -- prickly, dryly funny, and using the gender-neutral pronoun "ka" that their homeland's Ruravian dialect assigns to soldiers -- narrates this trilogy of short, atmospheric horror novels, each a loose riff on a classic Gothic or weird-fiction source. What Moves the Dead reworks Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, with Alex arriving to check on a dying childhood friend in a decaying manor surrounded by a lake full of wrong, twitchy fungus and stranger things still. What Feasts at Night sends Alex to a hunting lodge plagued by a nightmare-inducing presence that's slowly killing anyone who sleeps there, while What Stalks the Deep takes the series underground into cave systems and things that live in the dark.

Kingfisher's take on Gothic horror keeps her trademark wit fully intact even as the scares land hard -- Alex's blunt, unimpressed narration and the mycologist sidekick Eugenia Potter provide comic relief without undercutting the dread, a balance that's made the trilogy a critical favorite and a Hugo/Nebula-nominated entry point for horror readers who'd never tried Kingfisher's more overtly romantic fantasy work. Each book is a fast read -- more novella-length than her typical novels -- and was published under the 'A Sworn Soldier Novel' banner.

How to read this series

Read in publication order: What Moves the Dead (2022), What Feasts at Night (2024), then What Stalks the Deep (2025). Each book is a self-contained horror story with its own haunted setting and threat, so you could technically read them out of order, but Alex Easton's circle of recurring companions -- particularly the mycologist Eugenia Potter -- and Alex's own backstory build steadily across the trilogy, and the books are short enough (each closer to novella length) that there's no real reason not to read them in sequence.
