Years after wrapping up The Expanse, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck returned to space opera with a darker, stranger premise: what happens after humanity loses first contact, badly. The Carryx, an ancient empire of alien conquerors who have been subjugating species across the galaxy for millennia, arrive at Earth and Mars and simply take over — not with a war humanity has any chance of winning, but with an occupation designed to fold the conquered into the Carryx's vast, competitive imperial machine. The Mercy of Gods follows a small group of scientists on a conquered colony world forced to prove their usefulness to their new rulers or be discarded, opening a story about survival, adaptation and quiet resistance under a totalizing power humanity never had a chance to fight on equal terms.

Where The Expanse built outward from a grounded, human-scale mystery into ever-widening space opera, The Captive's War inverts that shape — it opens already inside an overwhelming alien empire and asks what dignity and agency look like when total defeat is the starting point rather than the climax. Corey's hallmarks carry over: hard-edged physics, morally serious characters making difficult calls under pressure, and prose that treats the human cost of grand events as seriously as the events themselves.
