Across seven novels and a collection of prequel novellas, Sarah J. Maas expands the cast from one antiheroine to a sprawling web of witches, princes, warriors, and healers, each carrying a piece of the endgame. Few modern fantasy series commit so fully to long-arc payoff: characters introduced as villains or footnotes in early books become load-bearing by the finale, and details planted in book one detonate five volumes later.

The series sits at the older end of young adult fantasy, growing darker and more adult as it goes. It rewards readers who love found family, slow-burn romance that shifts across the series rather than settling early, and battle-heavy final acts. How to read this series

Start with Throne of Glass and read in publication order. The one real decision is The Assassin's Blade, a bind-up of five prequel novellas: it was published third, but many readers (and a common fan recommendation) save it until after Heir of Fire and before Queen of Shadows, where its emotional payoff lands hardest — that is the order we recommend. Reading it first works too, but it softens several early-series reveals. Tower of Dawn runs parallel to Empire of Storms; do not skip it, as its events are essential to Kingdom of Ash. The series is complete at eight volumes.
