Alchemical Journeys is Seanan McGuire's series of interconnected but standalone dark fantasy novels, each built around a different classical alchemical element and united by a hidden world of impossible cities, amoral alchemists, and forces trying to reshape reality through story and language. Middlegame opens the sequence with Roger and Dodger, twins engineered and separated at birth by an alchemist chasing godlike power through the manipulation of language and math -- a novel about doors between impossible cities, deliberately cruel creators, and a bond that keeps reasserting itself across every attempt to break it. Seasonal Fears follows as a loose companion set in the same world, centered on Melanie and Harry as they're drawn into an ancient race between the Summer and Winter Kings that will decide who inherits the throne of the seasons.

Each entry stands alone with its own cast and central relationship, connected by shared background mythology -- the Alchemical Congress, the manipulation of ideas as raw material, doors that open onto more than they should -- rather than continuing plot. McGuire has described a five-book plan tied to the five classical alchemical elements (fire, earth, water, air, aether), with Tidal Creatures and Inkpot Gods continuing that structure.

This is denser, more myth-inflected work than McGuire's urban fantasy series: literary dark fantasy concerned with story, sacrifice, and the cost of being made rather than born.

How to read this series

Each Alchemical Journeys novel is a standalone with its own cast, so there's no required reading order -- you can start with whichever premise appeals most. Publication order (Middlegame → Seasonal Fears → Tidal Creatures → Inkpot Gods) is the most common path and lets you watch the shared mythology (the Alchemical Congress, doors, the manipulation of language and story as raw material) deepen book to book, but nothing carries forward in the way a numbered series would. Middlegame is the most-read entry point and the one most reviewers recommend starting with.
