Rose Marshall died on Sparrow Hill Road in 1952 -- run off the road on prom night by a man in a black car -- and never left. Sparrow Hill Road introduces her as a hitchhiking ghost, one of American folklore's classic phantom hitchhikers, who has spent decades since her death as a psychopomp of the ghost roads: guiding the lost and dying safely home, warring with the routewitches and hitchers who share her stretch of highway, and hunting for the man who killed her. Seanan McGuire builds an original American road mythology out of that folklore -- the ghost roads, the diner at the edge of the world, the rules that govern who can cross between the living world and the dead -- with the same rigorous, rule-bound worldbuilding she brings to her other series.

The trilogy follows Rose across decades of her afterlife, deepening the mythology of the ghost roads and slowly closing in on the truth of her own murder. It's a moodier, more melancholy read than McGuire's urban fantasy elsewhere: less found-family warmth, more highway-at-midnight ache, though her voice and dry humor still come through.

Complete at three books, Ghost Roads is set in the same wider McGuire multiverse as InCryptid -- Rose's world brushes against the Price family's -- but reads as a fully self-contained story.

How to read this series

Read in publication order: Sparrow Hill Road, The Girl in the Green Silk Gown, then Angel of the Overpass. The trilogy follows Rose Marshall's afterlife across decades and slowly reveals the truth behind her death, so reading in order matters for that mystery to land. Sparrow Hill Road itself began as a set of linked short stories before being published as a novel, but read as a single continuous book it works fine on its own.

You don't need to have read InCryptid first -- Ghost Roads is set in the same wider Seanan McGuire multiverse and the two occasionally brush against each other, but each stands entirely on its own. The trilogy is complete at three books.
