The Book of the Null is David Annandale's original epic-fantasy series, set on the world of Eloran -- a patchwork of imperious elven realms, fractious human nations, and the skeletal, feared kaul, each jockeying for advantage over the others. It opens with The Sleep of Empires: when Latanna Forgrym refuses the marriage her manipulative father arranges for her and instead weds a man she respects, a chance encounter with a pair of mercenaries leads her to a lost crown -- a relic of forces Eloran has spent generations trying to forget. The crown sets one of those mercenaries, the kaul warrior Vorykas, on a path to recovering first his name and then the fragments of his erased past, as a forbidden book resurfacing threatens to expose knowledge that enemies will kill to keep buried.

Published by Pyr (an imprint distributed by Simon & Schuster), the series is billed as noir-inflected epic fantasy for readers of Tolkien and Robert Jordan, and draws on the same grim intrigue and creeping horror Annandale is known for from his Warhammer 40,000 and Horus Heresy fiction. A sequel, The Banners of the Night, has been announced as Book #2, continuing the story with escalating stakes and large-scale magical conflict, though it had not been released as of this catalogue's last check.
