About the Firefighters series

Firefighters is J.R. Ward's brief, contemporary detour from paranormal romance into romantic suspense: no vampires, no Caldwell, just a fire department, an arsonist, and two people whose shared history makes trusting each other dangerous in more ways than one. Anne Ashburn comes from a family of firefighters and was on track to run the department herself before a fire she survived ended that career and left her working arson investigation instead -- chasing the thing that took her old life from her. When a new string of suspicious fires starts hitting too close to home, she's forced back into close, charged proximity with Danny Maguire, a firefighter with his own reasons to want the arsonist caught, and a pull toward Anne that complicates an investigation neither of them can afford to get wrong.

Consumed (2018) is the main event: a slow-burn suspense romance built around grief, guilt, and a killer who may be targeting Anne specifically. The Wedding from Hell is a short prequel -- originally serialized in three e-novella installments before being collected into a single bind-up -- that drops Anne and Danny into the chaos of someone else's wedding and lets the spark between them ignite before the main investigation begins.

No sequel to Consumed has followed since 2018; Ward returned to the Black Dagger Brotherhood shortly after, leaving Firefighters a self-contained pair of books rather than an ongoing series.
