About the Grant County series
Before Will Trent, Karin Slaughter made her name in Grant County, a fictional rural corner of Georgia where the college town of Heartsdale hides violence its citizens prefer not to see. The series orbits three people: Sara Linton, the town's pediatrician who doubles as county coroner; her ex-husband (and again husband) Jeffrey Tolliver, Heartsdale's chief of police; and Lena Adams, Jeffrey's talented, self-destructive young detective, whose bad choices generate as much havoc as the killers do. Beginning with Blindsighted (2001) — a mutilated body discovered in a diner booth, and a serial predator with a personal connection to Sara — each novel pairs a wrenching forensic mystery with the slow detonation of the characters' private lives.
Slaughter's trademarks were present from the start: unblinking depictions of sexual violence and its aftermath, small-town institutions protecting the wrong people, and a refusal to let her heroes heal on schedule. Sara and Jeffrey's rekindled marriage gives the series its heart; Lena's spiral gives it its dread. The six books form a complete arc, and the finale, Beyond Reach (2007), ends the series with one of modern crime fiction's most notorious gut-punches — a conclusion so consequential that Slaughter's next series, Will Trent, is largely built on its fallout.
