About the Tim Rackley series
Before Orphan X, Gregg Hurwitz built his first ongoing series around Tim Rackley, a deputy U.S. Marshal whose faith in the justice system collapses in The Kill Clause (2003) when a legal technicality frees the man who murdered his young daughter. Rackley responds by joining the Commission, a vigilante group of grieving parents and disillusioned professionals meting out the punishment the courts won't — only to find himself hunting the group from the inside once its methods spiral out of his control. The Program (2004) sends him undercover into a predatory self-help cult to extract a senator's daughter, Troubleshooter (2005) pits him against a Mexican cartel enforcer he once helped put away, and Last Shot (2006) closes the series with a conspiracy reaching into a black-ops government program.
The four novels trace Rackley's slide toward — and eventual retreat from — the same territory Hurwitz would return to more famously with Evan Smoak: a lawman drawn to operating outside the law when the law itself fails, and the toll that takes on the people who love him. Hurwitz's research-heavy, tactically detailed action and his interest in grief and moral compromise are both fully formed here, making the series a clear dry run for the emotional and structural DNA of Orphan X a decade later.
