About the Kingsbridge series

Ken Follett's Kingsbridge novels are sweeping, doorstop-sized epics of ordinary people caught up in the great building projects and social upheavals of English history, all centred on the fictional cathedral town of Kingsbridge. The series began with The Pillars of the Earth (1989), following the decades-long construction of Kingsbridge Cathedral across the 12th century's civil war known as the Anarchy — masons, monks, and nobles thrown together by ambition, faith, and the sheer scale of building a Gothic cathedral by hand.

Each subsequent novel returns to Kingsbridge generations or centuries later, following new descendants and new upheavals: the Black Death and Hundred Years' War in World Without End, the Reformation and Elizabethan intrigue in A Column of Fire, the Dark Ages origins of the town in the prequel The Evening and the Morning, and the Industrial Revolution and fight against the slave trade in The Armour of Light. How to read this series

Each Kingsbridge novel is a self-contained story set generations apart, so you can technically start anywhere — but reading in publication order gives the fullest experience of how Follett builds the town's history. Start with The Pillars of the Earth (1989), the original and most acclaimed entry, set during the cathedral's construction in the 12th century.

If you'd rather follow Kingsbridge's history in a straight line, read in chronological (in-story) order instead: The Evening and the Morning (a prequel set in the Dark Ages, roughly 997 AD) comes first, followed by The Pillars of the Earth (1120s), World Without End (1300s), A Column of Fire (1550s), and finally The Armour of Light (1790s-1800s). Either path works; the chronological route means meeting Kingsbridge's earliest history last if you follow publication order instead.
