About the Oregon Files series

The Oregon is a rust-streaked, deliberately decrepit-looking freighter that is secretly one of the most advanced vessels afloat: a floating arsenal packed with hidden weapons, submersibles and stealth technology, crewed by mercenary operatives who take on jobs no government can touch. It belongs to the Corporation, a private paramilitary outfit led by Juan Cabrillo, a former CIA officer who lost a leg in the line of duty and now runs missions that blend high-tech espionage with old-fashioned swashbuckling. Clive Cussler spun the series off from Dirk Pitt in 2003, giving himself a cast unbound by NUMA's more grounded, historically-flavored mysteries and free to chase modern threats — arms dealers, terrorists, pirates, rogue states — at a faster, pulpier clip.

The books lean harder into gadgetry and team-based action than any other Cussler series: Cabrillo's crew includes a weapons specialist, a doctor, a hacker and a small army of specialists who each get their moment, and the Oregon itself is practically a character, forever revealing some new hidden capability at the exact moment the plot needs it. Craig Dirgo co-wrote the first two books, Jack Du Brul carried the series for most of the 2000s and 2010s, Boyd Morrison took over in 2015, and since Cussler's 2020 death the series has continued under Mike Maden. Fans of fast, high-tech military-adventure thrillers — Tom Clancy with more banter — are the natural audience.

How to read this series

Publication order, starting with Golden Buddha (2003). Each book is a self-contained mission, so new readers can start almost anywhere, but Cabrillo's crew and the Oregon's evolving tech are easiest to follow in sequence.

The series has passed through several writing teams without ever rebooting: Craig Dirgo (books 1-2), Jack Du Brul (3-9), Boyd Morrison (10-15) and, since Clive Cussler's 2020 death, Mike Maden (16 onward, credited as "Clive Cussler's..." on the cover though Cussler had no hand in writing them). The tone stays consistent across all of these hand-offs, so there's no obvious place a new reader needs to pause.
