About the Angels Everywhere series

Angels Everywhere is Debbie Macomber's long-running series of gentle, faith-inflected romances narrated in part by a trio of bumbling trainee guardian angels -- Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy -- who are dispatched to earth to help mismatched couples find love, usually making a fair amount of well-meaning chaos along the way. Each book follows a new human couple the angels are assigned to nudge together, blending Macomber's usual small-scale relationship drama with a genuinely supernatural, often comic framing device rare in her other work.

The series became strongly associated with the Christmas season -- several entries are explicitly holiday-set, and the angels' interventions frequently revolve around Christmas miracles, reconciliations, and last-minute matches timed to the season. It spun off into one of the more recognizable adaptations of Macomber's catalog: Hallmark's Mrs. Miracle and later Signed, Sealed, Delivered-adjacent programming drew on the same guardian-angel, small-town-miracle sensibility, though the direct Angels Everywhere books themselves were also separately adapted for television.

Spanning nearly two decades between its first and last entries, the series shows Macomber returning periodically to Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy whenever a new angelic matchmaking premise struck her, rather than following a tight continuing timeline.

How to read this series

Each Angels Everywhere book follows a new couple and can be read independently, since Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy are reassigned to a different pair of humans each time. Publication order -- A Season of Angels, The Trouble with Angels, Touched by Angels, Shirley Goodness and Mercy, Those Christmas Angels, Where Angels Go, Angels at the Table -- simply tracks when Macomber returned to the angels, and is a reasonable way to read them, but isn't required.
